Our family have a long and prestigious history of ice cream making in the West Country, where we have been producing award winning ice creams for almost a century.
Winstones Ice Cream was originally founded in 1925 by Albert Winstone when he began making and dispensing delicious ice creams from his farmhouse kitchen on the edge of National Trust common land overlooking the beautiful Stroud valleys. Reputation of Albert’s ice cream quickly grew and to cope with demand he opened a small kiosk on the grassland next to his home and within no time at all, he bought a motorcycle and side car which he used to bring his ice creams to the customer.
From these humble beginnings, Albert’s West Country business grew rapidly over the next few decades, expanding enough to build a brand new purpose built ice cream factory, and office development and build a workforce of highly skilled artisan ice cream makers.
Between 1960 and 1999 Winstones won the Ice Cream Alliance Silver Challenge Cup, one of the industry’s highest accolades, a record nine times, going on to win Great Taste Awards and Gloucestershire Business awards in more recent years.
By the 1960’s Albert’s son Frank joined the business and in the 1970’s he became the company’s managing director when Albert and wife Doris retired.
Our Business Today
Today our family ice cream factory still stands on the original site where it all began in the 1920’s perched on the edge of National Trust common land. We still strive to make the best ice cream around, using the best ingredients available and Winstones Ice Cream continues to grow under the directorship of Albert’s granddaughter Jane, and two son’s Tom and Ben. Over the years we have formed close partnerships with some of the best farms and bakeries around, ensuring that our ice cream is still as lip smackingly delicious as it was when Albert set out all those years ago, dispensing ice cream from his motorcycle and side car.
To date, we are one of the United Kingdom’s longest running and most highly awarded ice cream manufacturers and ice cream wholesalers, a legacy and heritage which we are very proud of as both a family and a business.
